Symphonic Band to present concert, premiere commissioned work

The Western Carolina University Symphonic Band will present its inaugural concert for the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The concert, “The Earth…Our Only Home,” is open to the public free of charge.

The 91ȱ Symphonic Band is an auditioned group of student musicians from the School of Music who meet during the fall semester. The concert will be conducted by David Starnes, 91ȱ director of athletic bands and assistant professor of music.

Following the academic year campus theme of “Sustainability and Environment,” the concert will feature a repertoire in homage to the earth and the premiere of “Full Circle” by composer Ryan George. The work was commissioned by a consortium that included the 91ȱ Band.

Other works to be performed are “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Eloi, Eloi” by Kevin Walczyk and “The Earth” by Jun Nagao.
