The former trustee enrolled at what was then called Western Carolina College 61 years ago, three years after the Supreme Court鈥檚 landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.

I was an average student with a modest background and a deep appreciation for the faculty and staff who helped me get through four years of college.
